yucky slush and wow do kids grow up fast!
It’s 7:50 AM, shouldn’t I be at school? Welcome to the South…We have icicles hanging from the eaves, a little ice on the trees, and rumors of slick bridges and overpasses. Some schools have shut down completely, others (mine) will start 1 1/2 hours later. I’m glad we’re going to get the day in. If I was at a school that shut down the entire day I would be highly ticked. If I’m going to lose a weather day there had durn well better be enough snow on the ground to have a snowman. OR it should be necessary to float out of the neighborhood. (That’s only happened once.) Glad we’re not losing a weather day, but couldn’t they have shared this info last night? I mean 6 AM comes early, I could have slept another hour! Yes, in the South we shut down if there is the threat of snow…or it gets icy. I find it annoying, but can understand it. We do not have the equipment to clear the roads, and it is not necessary to purchase it b/c it would not be used that often. Most of the county schools bus kids so they have a valid reason to close. The busses are precarious even on good days. *sigh* are you guys in the North throroughly amused by this? Go ahead, giggle. It’s fine. Most of us find it pretty ridiculous too.

My kids are growing up!!! Yesterday my nine year old put on makeup for church. WHAT! My nine year old not so girly girl?!?!? Yep. Her response when told she would be removing it…you do it. Yes, but you’re 9! OK, Djembe said this was a very delicate sitch and I needed to handle it with sensitivity b/c it could scar her for life if I didn’t…yeah yeah..but my 9 year old has on purple eyeshadow! I didn’t make her take it all off. I figured choose your battles and late for church, I didn’t want a huge battle. So we had a marathon makeup lesson taking off most of what she put on and then brushing something much lighter over it so you could barely tell. Her response? “But I want you to be able to notice it.” Of course. *sigh* Time to start girl talks with her. Don’t even get me started on the little boy that called.
Little bit is now reading. I’ve had just about all of The Foot Book that I can stand. This is something we want to encourage, I know. I’m loving her excitement though. She’s thrilled to be able to read and not have to have someone else read to her. When her teacher started letting her check books out of the library I was really surprised by some of her choices. I even emailed her teacher expressing concern b/c she seemed to be needing help with every word. She’s in kindergarten, isn’t someone helping with these choices? I was assured that her questions were attempts for attention and if I asked the right questions she would get the words on her own and the attention she wants too. Turns out the teacher was right. Go figure.
