time lost

Author: kontan  //  Category: Ramblings

In an effort to protect students from slushy roads and sliding busses we started school 1 1/2 hours late Monday. No, no specific time given, just 1 1/2. Is that from the first bell or the actual start of school? Either way, it was a wasted day. Few students showed up for first and second. Others trickled in throughout the day. First period, 10 minutes….then second for 5. Then we went on to the black history program. Each year this program has the potential to go either way. This year, eh, wasn’t impressed. First of all, speaker dude really needed to spend more time studying history before explaining it to the student body. He describes the beginnings of civilization in Africa, then the slave trade…with semi-accuracy…then moves on to the Emancipation Proclamation which he stated separated the free states and slave states. wth? mmm, k. I’ll spare you the history lesson but speaker dude was off on several of his facts and jumped from time period to time period and back. He also did not speak clearly AT ALL. Nice man and all, but not one I would have chosen for the guest speaker. The student black history choir was pretty good. After a lengthy presentation we went on to fourth period…the day is half over at this point. I didn’t want to get my classes off pace with each other so I had students finish worksheets that were given out Friday. They worked, I worked…all was well in our world. I figured the day would just be written up as a loss and we would start new on Tuesday. Well, admin got the bright idea to make up the time missed by adding time to 1st and 3rd periods today, and 2nd/4th periods tomorrow. WHAT! great. Now as a result I am not one…but TWO freakin days behind! cruddage. WHY? Why not just scrap the day and let the teachers move on from there? So juggling of the lesson plan, rearranging of media center time and activity…we are now on our way…behind schedule. Not thrilled, but not my call and no one asked me (or any other teacher apparently.) All this for slush. Slush people, not snowman making snow. Slushy, icey, yuck.

Could be worse…I could have been rear ended by a bus this morning. huh.gif

Tomorrow is another day…the week isn’t bad, just a little annoying. Keep saying that and maybe it will come true…

St. Louis

Sage asks “What is the appeal of St. Louis?”

Not for everyone, but we certainly enjoy it. Here is a write up of our last trip there…

Not the original plan, but still a GREAT getaway.

We’ve had a blast today. The hotel is very nice. Concierge is very helpful, but I have never cared for valet service. I like to know where my car is and be able to go to it anytime without feeling like I am putting someone out to go get it just because I need something. (Haven’t had to do that yet, but still!) I do love that it is kid friendly. at breakfast this morning we were given a bag for each child that had in it crayons, coloring book, snack and juice, (annoying) noise making bouncy bal, and a few other cute items. The girls really enjoyed playing checkers and chess in the lobby after breakfast. There’s a baby grand in the lobby, I would love to hear someone break out in song.

Today was a LONG day. Kids are exhausted. We went to Grants Farm. Rode the tram through the animal refuge and got to see an adorable red fox hiding under a fallen tree. No oreo cow this time, she was hiding I guess. Lots of deer, antelope, geese, and other animals. We spent time at the clydesdale stables where the girls enjoyed petting the horses. “Froggy” was a little alarmed at one nibbling at “Tweety’s” hair. “Tweety” thought it was funny. We had cold drinks at the Bauernhof. Didn’t get to see all of the carriages this time because they were preparing to host portions of a telethon this weekend. Before leaving we stopped in at White Haven. The bright green house in the picture. This was one of the homes of Ulysses Grant. I thought the color was odd, but it is supposed to be very close to the original. This house was part of Julia Dent’s family. Grant built another home on the property. I actually like it much better. The pic is on the still camera. (Got a new digi and am having fun playing with it!) Grant’s Farm is a favorite for us.n There are lots of neat animals, mccaws, a gigantic turtle, and bald eagles.

After Grant’s Farm was the best barbecue at Bandana’s. I love ribs! Lunch was a good rest so we headed on to the transportation museum. I know Djembe and the girls were not as into it as me. It was basically a rail yard with old engines and such. I thought it was cool. The entrance had an old bomber plane and a ferry boat. The rest was engines and rail cars from 19th century forward. I took a ton of pics there.

Tomorrow will be Cahokia (I hope), then down to the arch where I also want a good pic of the Dred Scott courthouse, and we will spend some time at the city museum that we’ve heard people raving about.

BTW, the gothic looking building is just one that I like. It is engraved city hall above the entrance, I’m not sure if it still is or not.

Day 2:

We had a wonderful day taking in the history of the area today. One of the highlights of all of my St. Louis trips was visiting the Dred Scott courthouse this morning. We were just going to drive by on our way to Cahokia Mounds and get a pic, but it turned out we were able to go inside and see the courtrooms and other exhibits. The Dred Scott case was first heard in what is now the entrance, because of a weakening structure it had to be redone. We were able to go into the courtroom above the original so the original probably looked very similar. After the case went through several higher courts it came back to this building where Scott’s freedom was purchased in courtroom 13. It was not accessible today due to renovations.

We also went to the Cahokia mound site. With a 14 acre base, Cahokia’s Monk’s mound is the largest in North America. Fortunately it was not too hot today, it was a long hike to the top! There is an interpretive center on site that was really well done. They have lifelike recreations of what it must have been like at the height of the Cahokia settlement. I was amazed at the societal organization with class structure, subsistence, and commerce.

After Cahokia we went over to St. Louis Mills, a HUGE mall. We had a good Tex/Mex lunch then roamed the mall for a little while finally deciding on ice skating for an afternoon activity. It was chilly, but a lot of fun. For a first timer”Tweety” did very well. She was very confident when she, in her words, “got the hang of it”. That child has no fear. “Froggy” did very well too. She has been a few times before and really enjoys it. The kids needed to run off a little more energy so we let them play in the kids play area. Every mall should have one of these. It is a padded area for kids to climb around and slide…a mall play place! Great shops, and lots to do, it is a definite repeat activity for our next trip here.

Day 3 and home sweet home!
It is so wonderful to be home! We had a wonderful time at the St. Louis Zoo before heading home. The goal was to get the girls good and exhausted before heading out so that they would sleep the whole way home. Nope, didnt work. We were all exhausted after walking around the zoo, but they didnt sleep!

St. Louis has a wonderful zoo. Free entrance and you can see most everything. There are, of course, many ways to spend money while in the zoo. You have to pay for special exhibits. One of my favorites is the insectarium and butterfly house (of course). “Tweety” and I had a wonderful time walking through there. There was also a very friendly giraffe that took an interest in observers. The habitats are so wonderful at that it is sometimes hard to see the animals if they choose to hide in the shade. I prefer it that way, but it is still nice when they grace you with their presence. We had a great day regardless. Lots to see.

The way home was uneventful. The girls played their games and watched a video. Minimal sibling rivalry. It was a search to find affordable gas. Looks like prices are dropping now that we are home. (of course.)

All in all, great trip. Glad we were able to go again.

yucky slush and wow do kids grow up fast!

It’s 7:50 AM, shouldn’t I be at school? Welcome to the South…We have icicles hanging from the eaves, a little ice on the trees, and rumors of slick bridges and overpasses. Some schools have shut down completely, others (mine) will start 1 1/2 hours later. I’m glad we’re going to get the day in. If I was at a school that shut down the entire day I would be highly ticked. If I’m going to lose a weather day there had durn well better be enough snow on the ground to have a snowman. OR it should be necessary to float out of the neighborhood. (That’s only happened once.) Glad we’re not losing a weather day, but couldn’t they have shared this info last night? I mean 6 AM comes early, I could have slept another hour! Yes, in the South we shut down if there is the threat of snow…or it gets icy. I find it annoying, but can understand it. We do not have the equipment to clear the roads, and it is not necessary to purchase it b/c it would not be used that often. Most of the county schools bus kids so they have a valid reason to close. The busses are precarious even on good days. *sigh* are you guys in the North throroughly amused by this? Go ahead, giggle. It’s fine. Most of us find it pretty ridiculous too.

Next topic…

My kids are growing up!!! Yesterday my nine year old put on makeup for church. WHAT! My nine year old not so girly girl?!?!? Yep. Her response when told she would be removing it…you do it. Yes, but you’re 9! OK, Djembe said this was a very delicate sitch and I needed to handle it with sensitivity b/c it could scar her for life if I didn’t…yeah yeah..but my 9 year old has on purple eyeshadow! I didn’t make her take it all off. I figured choose your battles and late for church, I didn’t want a huge battle. So we had a marathon makeup lesson taking off most of what she put on and then brushing something much lighter over it so you could barely tell. Her response? “But I want you to be able to notice it.” Of course. *sigh* Time to start girl talks with her. Don’t even get me started on the little boy that called.

Little bit is now reading. I’ve had just about all of The Foot Book that I can stand. This is something we want to encourage, I know. I’m loving her excitement though. She’s thrilled to be able to read and not have to have someone else read to her. When her teacher started letting her check books out of the library I was really surprised by some of her choices. I even emailed her teacher expressing concern b/c she seemed to be needing help with every word. She’s in kindergarten, isn’t someone helping with these choices? I was assured that her questions were attempts for attention and if I asked the right questions she would get the words on her own and the attention she wants too. Turns out the teacher was right. Go figure.

Have you ever spent a day with a large group of second and third graders? That was my day. I drove to Birmingham last night so that I would not have to get up at 0′dark thirty this morning. Stayed with family and as usual had a BLAST. This morning I, along with the best babysitter in the world, got up, ready, and over to the McWane Center to meet my oldest. Field trip!!! We went to see the Africa exhibit, but there is so much more to do. It is actually a science center. Here is part of their description from the website:

This state-of-the-art science center, aquarium and IMAX Dome Theater is housed in the historic and refurbished Loveman’s department store building.
McWane Science Center combines two institutions of the recent past, Discovery Place and Red Mountain Museum, to create a stimulating interactive science museum and a depository of natural artifacts for collection, storage, and interpretive display.

The kids had a blast! They rode a cycle across a high wire, rested on a bed of nails, played virtual reality pong, built the St. Louis Arch out of foam blocks, completed various puzzles and experiments, and saw an IMAX Africa Safari. There is just SO much to do there!

Long day, mind is tired, as is body…off the bed. If you ever get the chance to check an explorium or science center like McWane…DO IT! Fun for children AND their parents.

Thursday Thirteen #4

Thirteen Things you really didn’t need to know

I do not know the validity of ANY of these…found them here.

1.
Ancient Romans at one time used human urine as an ingredient in their toothpaste.

Oh I so hope not.

2. During the Roman times, people used urine, called lotium in Latin, as a hair product.

3. In Japan, by the time man reaches the age of 60, he is commemorated with a special ceremony. This ceremony features the man wearing a red kimono, which denotes that he no longer has the responsibilities of being a mature adult.

So what age do we need to do that in the States?

4.The average America online user spends 70 minutes day online.

Hmm, I would have thought more.

5. The average four year-old child asks over four hundred questions a day.

6. The strike note of the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is e-flat.

7. A dime has 118 ridges around the edge.

8. A person uses approximately fifty-seven sheets of toilet paper each day.

9. An office desk has 400 times more bacteria than a toilet.

10. Kermit the frog delivered the commencement address at Southampton College located in the state of New York in 1996.

Looked that one up and it seems to be true.

11. Approximately 850 peanuts make a 18 oz jar of peanut butter.

12. David Rice Atchinson was President of the United States for exactly one day. This happened due to a glitch in American law at the time.

For more information

13. In the 1985 Boise, Idaho mayoral election, there were four write-in votes for Mr. Potato Head.

There you have it…13 completely useless facts!

Have a great day!

Visitors!

We have visitors! Couldn’t figure out what the dogs were barking at this afternoon so I looked out the back doors and here ya go! We haven’t had water fowl in a while! Well, not since the ducks “voluntarily” left during a severe summer storm. (They’re happy and safe some where…really, they are!)

Maybe these two will hang around for a while.

Happy Hallmark Hearts!
