Our own backyard

In his T13 comment Sage mentioned the Civil Rights Museum was interesting. As many visits as I make to the Birmingham area I’ve never been there. As long as I lived in the Shoals area, I never went to visit the Helen Keller home, W.C. Handy home, AL Music Hall of Fame…so many places! When we travel I try to visit the historic sites, why not at home? Currently we live in MS. I haven’t even researched to find out all the historic sites here. I drive by Brice’s Crossroads to take the dogs to their vet. I have taken the kids to the park near Elvis’s birthplace. Lived less than a mile from there once…never went in. I did go to the museum’s gift shop to buy a gift once. Am I the only one to ignore the history in my own backyard?

Sage…stop by the coke museum and try “Beverly”, let me know what you think!

I think it has something to do with the fact that residents of a given city are usually too busy to play tourist there. I remember when I lived in Montreal, I never did all the touristy things that visitors to the city would do: visiting the big oratory on the mountain, taking caleche rides, going to the Old Port, taking in the Grand Prix….I was too preoccupied with school, work, and life.

Now that I don’t live there any more, part of me wishes I had taken the time. Still, now when we go back to visit, we play tourist, so we’re slowly catching up.

Popped by from Michele’s. It’s good to e-see you again.

YEP! NASTY stuff. LOL, but you have to try it just to say you did

Carmi, that’s just it…we don’t take the time and it is sad. It would be much easier (and cheaper) to explore what is nearby before taking off on vacation somewhere. I’m guilty though. The call to the beach is just too strong.

I never do the touristy stuff where I live either…in fact I live in a “beach town” and on father’s day my husband wanted to go eat at a specific restaurant at the beach and we realised that the last time we had gone to the beach was two years ago when we had out-of-town company.

    Michele says hi!

As I tend to live far away from family, I have plenty of opportunities to visit local sites in order to have something to do when they visit, but I do often go to changing exhibits at the museum and maintain memberships in a museum and garden (both 30 miles way) and a nature center (10 miles away).

I will publish a post on the Civil Rights Institute today. I’ve been in the Coca-Cola Museum in Las Vegas (even wrote an article on it tha was published in an obscure magazine, but it’s not on my laptop).
