I would blog…
…but I have nothing to blog about. I could complain about the end of the school year, but it would be easier if you just searched previous posts for this date. Same story, different year.
My AP students took their AP test today. I do not get to administer it, but several came to see me afterward. They weren’t in tears and they said they KNEW some things, were able to use what they knew to figure out others, and left some blank. They felt OK about it. In the grand scheme of things it really doesn’t matter, but it’s going to stink if the results come back and they ALL did poorly. I hope not, but I really don’t know what to expect.
The cool part…during AP week the students who are taking the exams are exempt from the rest of their classes on the day of the exam. I had 10 AP students today. Next Wednesday will be about the same b/c they have the AP English exam. It makes for a quiet two hours.
Honestly, I’m tired and not overly interested in writing about anything. Sorry, just the way it is.
Thanks for stopping by. I’m reading your blogs in my RSS reader, don’t take my lurking status as a sign that you aren’t being read. Happy weekend.
Riding the fence

Your views call for roughly same amount of goverment and liberty that we have today, with some desire for more economic freedom and more government control over certain personal behaviors.
It appears that you are relatively happy with the status quo, with probably some desire for more Republicans in office. However, there are limits to what this quiz can measure, so this assessment may not be correct. (Since you are close to the center, the “signal” may be lost in the “noise.”)
I do not feel that I seek more government regulation of behaviors. Honestly, I prefer the government be out of our lives as much as possible, but absolute laissez-faire is not feasible.
a little rant and ramble
I’m here…procrastinating yet again. I hate grading. I would love to simply teach and informally assess learning. We would review what they aren’t ‘getting’ and move forward when they are grasping what they need. Unfortunately, we have created grade mongers and the students/parents want more-more-more so that the term averages are well padded. I do not offer enough grades to make them satisfied, but it keeps admin happy enough.
More cuts to education are coming our way. Earlier in the week it was announced that all state employees would have receive a 10 hour furlough and a 1/2 percent cut in pay…starting in May and continuing at least through the summer. Teachers who are on 10 month contracts will see their May check cut by the appropriate 3 month amount so the state does not lose out on their earnings for June and July. Oh the furlough time can be taken between June 1 and December 31, but teachers are not allowed to take it on an instructional day.
(i ‘ll give you a moment to ponder that)
Let me explain how this whole teacher thing works. From August to June you bust it to prep, teach, grade and do all the paperwork and documentation that is required of you. This takes place even when school is not in session. On the days when you do not have students and admin hasn’t planned some asinine development workshop you are working…planning…grading…documenting. So…the only days teachers can take the furlough time are work days. Want to know what they will be doing on these days? Most likely, playing catch up…but it will be at home in their jammies. Fine. OK. This is what I signed up for…but it still irks me that all state employees will be funding the economic crunch…Well, all non-elected state employees. Elected officials do not fall under the umbrella of this executive order. Their participation is strictly voluntary.
In other news…our governor has asked for $41 Million in funds to be returned to the state. This comes after school districts previously returned around $58 Million last December. Wow. Just wow. A month left in school and the governor wants millions back from each school district. At least it feels like home here. Education cuts are the norm in AL and MS.
Somehow I don’t think it would be wise for us to hold our breath for an education bail out. Sure, it will be no problem to increase class size from the current overcrowded 32+/room in the high schools.
So glad I’m in a charter that is less impacted by the insanity. On the other hand, when it hits us it is going to hit hard.
