Gotta new phone…again

and I think I like it. Jem got one too. We switched our service and I’m hoping it was a wise move. I think it was, but time will tell. Jem has had trouble with @tee&tee and receiving calls at work so it is a step up for him. Me too, I hope. The girls will switch when their contacts are up. So far I’m happy with the Crackberry’s functionality. There are a few things that bother me, but I’m going to look for an app that fixes it- or the phone may do it and I just don’t know how yet. I can’t figure out how to customize the homescreen or the shortcuts for things like create new sms. It’s Jem’s first PDA/Smartphone so it will be amusing to see how he likes it. For lack of nothing better to blog, thought I would share…

Awesome — you did end up with an 8330 :) I think you’ll love the phone. I went from an old HTC Apache and iPhone 1G to my 8330 and really haven’t looked back since. A few pointers:

    1) You’ll find a HUGE market for replaceable parts on the 8330s on Amazon. The outer “screen” is really just a simple lens, so if it gets scratched up, you can find a replacement one on Amazon for $2-3. Same goes for the keyboard, outer front/back case, battery cover, etc.

    2) RIM/Blackberry IS including the 8330 in their 5.0 OS upgrades. A beta 5.0 for the 8330 released last week, and it actually runs faster than 4.5, as well as adding a LOT of nice features. It should be out within the next month or two.

    3) My biggest complaint about the phone is the browser. It’s still Not Very Good. I doubt we’ll ever get a better browser on the 8330. Opera Mini and BOLT! are two alternatives — both are a bit better, but I don’t care for either of em.

    4) Pandora Pandora Pandora.

    5) Having native AIM/Y!M/MSN/ICQ/GTalk clients are a very very VERY nice touch.

    6) The Facebook/MySpace apps are Okay. Still nowhere near as good as the iPhones.

    7) As much as you enjoy theming your website, check out Plasmic. It’s a software download — provided by RIM/Blackberry themselves — that lets you create new themes for your Blackberry. I haven’t ever tried it, but it seems easy enough.

Other than these, go crazy with BB App World and other OTA downloads. It’s arguably the best phone I’ve ever used.

Hogie, you’re awesome. Thanks for the info. Plasmic may be a kick! FB app is OK, and significantly better than any Twitter app available. Pandora makes me happy. Opera Mini I tried on my LG…hated it. BOLT! I may check out. I use a screen protector, but hate the “privacy” protector. I’m more about the apps than browsing. I used the GPS navigation today and think Google Maps does the same thing and it’s free. Although it may not be as accurate…I’m in search of a Geocaching app, but I may break down and purchase Cacheberry.
